New Car Assessment Programmes at Euro NCAP have handed out awards across the spectrum of the latest vehicles
At one end of the spectrum is the BMW i5, the electric version of the company’s well-established 5-series. As well as receiving the “safest car of the year” award from the South Korean KNCAP organisation and the “Top Safety Pick+” award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in the USA, the i5 was also subject to accolades from Euro NCAP.
The European New Car Assessment Programme awarded the eighth generation of the BMW 5 Series Saloon the highest rating of five stars.
The award was largely based on the model’s extensive standard equipment with safety-relevant driver assistance systems making a significant contribution to the 5-star rating. The car also scored points in the area of passive safety with its innovative integrated safety concept incorporating highly resilient support structures and precisely designed deformation paths along with a model-specific combination of precisely coordinated restraint systems. The car also scored highly for emergency braking systems to protect pedestrians and cyclists.
At the small family car end of the spectrum, the ORA 03 proved you don’t need the budgets of the major automotive manufacturers to impress the test houses. In the Green NCAP ratings, the small 03 achieved a score of 97% to comfortably gain a 5-star rating.
The rating was based on the results of tailpipe pollutant emissions and energy or fuel consumption efficiency as well as the sum of direct greenhouse gas output and the emissions related to the production and supply of the fuel/energy. Green NCAP’s Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) was measured separately as part of the testing, with ORA 03 achieving the ‘Greener Choice’ award in 2023 for having the lowest impact on the climate over its complete vehicle life.
